Economic Survey of Japan 2009: Health-care reform in Japan: controlling costs, improving quality

Japan’s health-care system should be improved by increasing its efficiency to limit costs, enhancing quality and reducing shortages. Moreover, universal coverage requires improving compliance in paying premiums.

日本の2006-07年の総保健医療支出の対GDP比は8.1％であり、OECD平均の8.9％を0.8％下回る。米国は、ずば抜けて最も保健医療支出の割合が多く、2007年は対GDP比16.0％であり、次いでフランス（11.0%）、スイス(10.8%)、ドイツ（10.4%）の順である。
