Technological innovation is essential for tackling climate change, but technologies for adapting to its effects have thus far received little attention. This paper presents a first-ever case study of innovation in crop biotechnology, using patent application data for three key environmental stresses: drought, soil salinity and temperature extremes. The study finds, for example, that the number of such patents submitted globally increased twentyfold, from 10 per year in 1995 to 200 in 2007. It also exists in French translation.

The conference will cover developments and the state-of-the art of environmental microbiology, as it is applied for biotechnological purposes, and the role of genetic engineering of micro-organisms intended for use in the environment, now and in the near future. It will also deal with the implications for biosafety risk assessment. A draft programme and registration form are now available online.

The revised Consensus Document on Compositional Considerations for New Varieties of Low Erucic Acid Rapeseed (Canola), number 24 in the Series on the Safety of Novel Foods and Feeds, is now available online. It contains information on the key nutrients, anti-nutrients and toxicants of food and feed obtained from this oilseed crop. Biotech varieties of canola are increasingly being used in several countries. This document revises and updates the 2001 issue (No.1 in the Series) which is hereby repealed.

The Guidance Document on Pathogenicity Factors in Assessing the Potential Adverse Health Effects of Micro-organisms, number 52 in the Series on Harmonisation of Regulatory Oversight in Biotechnology, is now available online. It addresses the concept of bacterial pathogenicity in the context of risk/safety assessment of deliberate release of ‘genetically engineered’ micro-organisms intended for commercial environmental applications.

The Volumes 3 and 4 on "Safety Assessment of Transgenic Organisms: OECD Consensus Documents" are now available. They compile documents issued between 2006 and 2010. These books should be of value to applicants for commercial uses of transgenic organisms (crops, trees, microorganisms), to regulators and risk assessors in national authorities, as well as the wider scientific community.
