Launch of the 2012 Social Institutions and Gender Index

The OECD Development Centre and the United States Department of State are co-hosting the launch of the updated 2012 Social Institutions and Gender Index (SIGI) in Washington on 10 May. The 2012 version of the SIGI reflects changes in laws or practices, an updated conceptual framework and improved data sources for over 100 countries.

Social and legal discrimination against women remains a major obstacle to economic development in emerging and developing countries, according to the latest edition of OECD’s Social Institutions and Gender Index (SIGI). Though women’s rights are improving in a number of countries, in others women are still barred from contributing to the social and economic well-being of their families.

Seminar "Inequality, Poverty and Public Policies in Latin America"

Nora Lustig (Tulane University, Center for Global Development and Inter-American Dialogue) presented her latest research on poverty, inequality and public policies in Latin America at a Seminar organised by the Development Centre on 11 July at the OECD Headquarters. Decreasing returns to education and targeted conditional cash transfers contribute to explain the bulk of the reduction of inequality in Argentina, Brazil, Mexico and Peru during the last decade.
