La biodiversité joue un rôle crucial dans le maintien de la vie. L’OCDE a conscience que, pour entretenir la biodiversité, il est indispensable de procéder à une évaluation économique des services écologiques, de développer les possibilités d’exploitation durable par le biais d’incitations économiques, dont la création de marchés, et de disposer d’indicateurs des paramètres clés de la biodiversité.
