The DSTI manages databases of internationally comparable statistics in the areas of science, technology and industry. These statistics and indicators underpin policy-related analytical work, particularly with respect to links between technology, competitiveness and globalisation. DSTI also plays a leading role in the development of international statistical standards in the STI area.

This database presents patent data linked to regions according to the addresses of the applicants and inventors. The data have been regionalised at a very detailed level so that over 2000 regions are covered across OECD countries. REGPAT allows patent data to be used in connection with other regional data, thus providing researchers with the means to develop a rich set of new indicators and undertake a broad range of analyses to address the regional dimension of innovation.

Economic globalisation has typically been measured using trade and FDI statistics. However, the emergence of global value chains with products often fabricated in one country, assembled in a second and sold in a third country, challenges these traditional indicators. This paper shows how international input-output tables can be used to provide complementary indicators on the growing importance of these global value chains.
