Biodiversity is fundamental to sustaining life. In order to maintain biodiversity, the OECD recognizes a need for economic valuation of ecological services, sustainable use opportunities through economic incentives, such as market creation, and indicators of key biodiversity variables.

The OECD convened an expert workshop on Innovative International Financing for Biodiversity Conservation and Sustainable use on July 2nd, 2009. The workshop was attended by more than 40 participants, including delegates from the OECD Working Group on the Economic Aspects of Biodiversity (WGEAB), developing country participants (including Brazil, Peru and Uganda), experts from the CBD, IUCN, UNEP and the GEF, as well as other NGOs and the private sector.
