Improved understanding of the relationship between public policy and environmental innovation is crucial to the design of environmentally effective and economically efficient environmental policies. However, hard evidence remains scarce. In an effort to fill this gap, this series brings together the results of a number of projects undertaken at the OECD Environment Directorate, exploring the links between environmental policy and innovation.

Based on a new dataset, the paper summarises recent evidence on the generation and international diffusion of selected climate change mitigation technologies (CCMTs) and their respective links to key policies. The data covers a selection of technology fields (renewable energy sources and ‘clean’ coal) and all countries over the last 30-35 years.
