Better information sharing on product issues will enhance consumer safety, says OECD

07-Jul-2010

Increasingly sophisticated products and a rapidly changing marketplace mean that surveillance authorities must swiftly detect and recall unsafe products. Global trade now makes international co-operation necessary even to ensure protection of domestic consumers, so enhanced information-sharing mechanisms are critical both between and within countries. The OECD has recently created a Working Party on consumer product safety to facilitate the sharing of information in this field.

Enhancing the value and effectiveness of environmental claims: protecting and empowering consumers - OECD workshop

from 15-Apr-2010 to 16-Apr-2010

Environmental claims have the potential to play an important role in encouraging consumers to make choices which support environmental goals, while rewarding innovative companies for their efforts in this regard. The impact of claims will be reduced, however, to the extent that they are unclear, confusing or fraudulent, diminishing consumer interest and confidence in green products and services. Thus, policymakers are challenged to provide consumers with meaningful information that could influence their behaviour, thereby expanding consumer choices that support sustainable consumption.
