OECD countries recognise the need for greater coherence in policies across sectors that affect developing countries. Aid alone cannot address the needs of the developing world. Policies in areas like agriculture, trade, investment, migration and others have a profound impact on developing countries, yet they often work at cross-purposes. An OECD initiative on policy coherence for development explores ways to ensure that government policies are mutually supportive of the countries' development goals. (more)

The 2012 Meeting of the National Focal Points for Policy Coherence for Development will have a thematic focus on food security. It will also consider institutional mechanisms for promoting PCD, and take forward work on impact assessment and monitoring of PCD. This meeting is by invitation only.

The OECD is pleased to launch on 1 November its International Platform on Policy Coherence for Development. The Platform seeks to respond to demand for an online “one-stop-shop” on PCD resources and is open to all stakeholders – OECD members, partner countries, CSOs, the private sector and other organisations. To help achieve higher, more inclusive, sustainable growth for the widest number of countries, the OECD is preparing a Strategy on Development. We are consulting with a broad range of stakeholders to identify how the OECD can strengthen knowledge sharing with developing countries, apply a comprehensive approach to development and enhance policy coherence for development. These consultations follow endorsement of the Framework for an OECD Strategy for Development at the 2011 OECD Ministerial Council Meeting in May 2011.

The OECD and the International Food & Agricultural Trade Policy Council are pleased to announce an international seminar on NTMs to take place at the OECD in Paris. The discussion among high-level experts from governments, international organizations, the private sector, academic institutions and civil society organizations will address, among others, the question of acheiving greater transparency and improved policy coherence for development on both existing and planned NTMs.

At the Ministerial Meeting celebrating the OECD’s 50th Anniversary (25-26 May 2011), Ministers welcomed a new comprehensive approach to development across the OECD, which seeks to achieve higher, more inclusive, sustainable growth for the widest number of countries. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, chair of the OECD’s 2011 Ministerial Council Meeting, stressed in her summary that this would be accomplished by greater collaboration and knowledge sharing, as well as deepening partnerships between the Organisation and developing countries that want to engage.

The OECD is delighted to host the 2011 Annual Bank Conference on Development Economics (ABCDE), in partnership with the World Bank and the Government of France.
As every year, the ABCDE will bring together leading development economists and policy makers. This year, participants will reflect on the challenge of Broadening Opportunities for Development. Speakers will discuss how inequalities of opportunity affect growth and development.
