Assessment of Chemicals

Member countries and other stakeholders assess the hazards of industrial chemicals.

OECD facilitates the use of Quantitative Structure-Activity Relationships Project [(Q)SARs] for chemical assessment.

Tools are created for estimating the exposure of chemicals to humans and the environment through their production, use and disposal.

The tools developed for environmental risk assessment are accessible via the Environmental Risk Assessment Toolkit.

OECD harmonises activities concerning new chemicals to reduce work for governments and costs for industry.

What's new

Two additional databases : Combined Exposure and Australian NICNAS Other available on eChemPortal

03-Jan-2012

The Collection of Case Studies on Risk Assessments of Combined Exposures to Multiple Chemicals (Combined Exposures) can now be searched on eChemPortal. To date, it gathers 5 case studies from the WHO OECD ILSI/HESI International Workshop on Risk Assessment of Combined Exposures to Multiple Chemicals.
The Australian NICNAS Other database contains Hazard assessment reports on existing chemicals other than Priority Existing Chemical assessments.

Schedule of Chemicals Assessments available on eChemPortal

12-Dec-2011

A new webpage “Schedule of Assessments” has been created on eChemPortal to lead to existing scheduling information of national/regional and international assessments notified to the OECD by OECD member countries and stakeholders. The links are provided with the aim to assist in avoiding duplication across national/regional programmes in the area of chemical assessment.

3593 J-CHECK endpoints can now be searched in eChemPortal

14-Nov-2011

Users of eChemPortal are now able to search on 3593 specific endpoint properties for chemical substances contained in the Japan CHEmicals Collaborative Knowledge database. J-CHECK is a database developed to provide information regarding the "Act on the Evaluation of Chemical Substances and Regulation of Their Manufacture, etc." (CSCL) by the Japanese authorities. Today, 657802 chemicals and 560920 property endpoints can be searched in eChemPortal.

“How-to link to eChemPortal’s substance search” new webpage

26-Oct-2011

A new webpage explaining how-to create links to search directly on eChemPortal has been created to encourage linking back to eChemPortal from other’s webpages.

New Emission Scenario Document on the Chemical Industry

28-Sep-2011

This OECD Emission Scenario Document (ESD) is intended to provide information on the sources, use patterns and release pathways of chemicals used in the chemical industry to assist in the estimation of releases of chemicals to the environment.

Outcome of the OECD workshop on metals specificities in environmental risk assessment

20-Sep-2011

On 7-8 September 2011, the OECD organized a workshop in Paris on metals specificities in environmental risk assessment. Concepts of bioavailability, effects assessments, fate and bioaccumulation specific to metals were presented with illustrative examples. Participants generally agreed with proposed concepts and formulated recommendations for further work. A report will be available in a few weeks.

Canadian Categorization Results (CCR) can be searched by chemical property

12-Oct-2011

Users of eChemPortal are now able to search specific endpoint properties for substances contained in The Ecological Categorization Results from Canada Database. This Database contains the ecological categorization results for substances on the Canadian Domestic substance list and the supporting data on: Inherent toxicity, Persistency and Bioaccumulation.

Three new and one revised Emission Scenario Document published

07-Jul-2011

Three new Emission Scenario Documents (ESDs) on the releases of chemicals from the Application of Radiation Curable Coatings, Inks, and Adhesives, from the Use of Metalworking Fluids, and from Water-Based Operations at Industrial and Institutional Laundries are now available. The ESD on Coating Application via Spray-Painting in the Automotive Refinishing Industry from 2004 was revised. ESDs describe methods for estimating emissions of chemicals from various industry sectors and/or from uses of chemicals. Including these new documents, OECD has so far published 27 ESDs.
