The Global Forum provides training in Tunisia on beneficial ownership information and the fight against tax evasion
08/04/2019 - The Global Forum on Transparency and Exchange of Information for Tax Purposes (the Global Forum) facilitated a seminar on Beneficial Ownership (BO) and Exchange of Information on Request (EOIR) on 4-5 April in Tunis, Tunisia. This was the fourth Global Forum training seminar on Beneficial Ownership that took place in Africa and was organised by the Directorate General of Taxation of Tunisia, under the supervision of the Minister of finance. The seminar was attended by more than 30 officials representing the tax administration, the company registry, the legal practitioners, the central bank and the anti-money laundering agency.
Ensuring the availability of beneficial ownership information is at the forefront of the international agenda on tax transparency and is an vital part of the international standards of transparency and exchange of information for tax purposes (both automatic and on request). The seminar was aimed at building awareness on the beneficial ownership transparency requirements in the exchange of information standard and the coordination between the various stakeholders at the national and international level.
In view of aligning its domestic legislation with the international standards of tax transparency, Tunisia has recently adopted a new legal framework on the beneficial ownership transparency, including by creating a beneficial ownership register. With the help of experts from the Global Forum Secretariat, participants to the seminar discussed the policy, legal, regulatory and institutional requirements for an effective implementation of a beneficial ownership transparency regime. The training seminar provided an opportunity to build and share collective knowledge, experience and networks among participants on the very important issues of BO and EOIR.
