The Global Forum launches the induction programme to assist Togo to implement the international standards on transparency and exchange of information for tax purposes
08/12/2017 - On 6 – 8 December 2017, a delegation from the Global Forum Secretariat comprised of Mr. Donal Godfrey, the Deputy Head of Secretariat and Mr. Ervice Tchouata, Tax Policy Analyst in the Secretariat launched the induction programme with the Togolese authorities in Lomé,, Togo. The delegation met with key Government stakeholders including the Ministry of Economy and Finance, the Ministry of Justice the Central Bank and the tax administration. A two-day sensitisation seminar was held to raise awareness of more than 60 participants from various Government agencies on the international standards of transparency and exchange of information for tax purposes and their implications and opportunities for Togo in the fight against tax evasion.
The induction programme is designed to help new members of the Global Forum ensure a smooth implementation of the international standards and benefit from exchange of information in their domestic revenue mobilisation.
Togo joined the Global Forum in October 2016 and will be reviewed against the standard of exchange of information upon request in 2019. The induction programme will enable Togo to prepare its peer review and also take step toward the implementation of the automatic exchange of information standard. Togo will also receive assistance to join the Convention on mutual administrative assistance in tax matters and train its auditors in the utilisation of exchange of information during tax audit.
The Minister of Finance and the Togo Revenue Office confirmed Togo’s commitment to the international standards and their determination to ensure a rapid implementation in Togo. Following the visit, a roadmap will be agreed between the Global Forum Secretariat and the Togolese authorities for the implementation of the standards.
