The Food Economy: Global Issues and Challenges

 

On 18-19 October 2007 the OECD Trade and Agriculture Directorate, the Dutch Ministry of Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality and the Dutch Agricultural Economics Research Institute (LEI - Wageningen UR) organised the 2nd Conference on the policy and research agenda of the future food supply chain, in The Hague, The Netherlands

  • Will globalization dictate the food economy?
  • What will be the main elements of future food policy?
  • Do governments or private actors determine (international) product standards?


These important questions were addressed during the Conference on the Food Economy which aimed at debating social, industry and policy developments with respect to food and anticipating research needs.


Key note speakers addressed the state-of-the-art in the food economy and provided a perspective for the future. Workshops were organised around three main themes: 

  • Value added creation and supply chain management in a globalising world; 
  • Towards a new food policy: supply chain developments and interactive policy making; 
  • Transparency and social responsibility in an international context. 
     

The conference brought together major actors worldwide from industry, policy and science to discuss developments in globalization versus regionalization, value added creation, supply chain management, product and production standards, social concerns, private versus public responsibilities and policy initiatives with important implications for the production, distribution and consumption of food.
