A review of the role of agriculture in the rural economy as indicated by its share in GDP, in employment, in land use and in population, with analysis of the integration of farm households in the rural economy through their diversification activities, on and off the farm.
The sources of risk in agriculture are numerous and diverse. Analysis on how these sources affect the development of agricultural policies, and therefore how to manage the risks inherent to this sector, must be global in nature.

Overall support to farmers in OECD countries has been declining. In 2008, it was 21% of farmers’ gross receipts, down from 22% in 2007 and 26% in 2006. This is the lowest level since the mid-1980s.
Overall support to farmers in OECD countries has been declining. In 2008, it was 21% of farmers’ gross receipts, the lowest level since the mid-1980s. The decline has largely been due to a narrowing of the gap between domestic and world agricultural commodity prices.

The role of agriculture and farm households in the rural economy is changing and diverse. In most regions, the share of agriculture in GDP and employment is small and decreasing, but agriculture dominates land use.
In Brazil, Chile, China, India, Russia, South Africa and Ukraine, agriculture continues to play a vital role in employment and food security. This report monitors and evaluates government support to agriculture in these seven emerging economies during 2006-08.
