The issue of food security, in the broad sense of the term, is as pertinent as ever and remains at the core of the Secretariat's programme of work in 2017-18. This issue – which includes preventing and managing food crises, food resilience and the region's ability to feed a rapidly growing population – is connected to the issue of urbanisation, gender equality, climate change, youth employment and stability, without which, little is possible.

The 2017-18 programme of work is closely aligned with several of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), notably the "Zero Hunger Goal" which is at the heart of the Food Crisis Prevention Network (RPCA) and the Global Alliance for Resilience (AGIR). All areas of work are supported by a cross-cutting function dedicated to advocacy and communication.
