NIS (Phase II): Canberra CCNM Seminar

... New Science and Technology Indicators for the Knowledge-Based Economy: Development Issues

Hyatt Hotel, Canberra, Australia (26-27 November 1998)

This Seminar (which involved OECD Member countries, some major non-member countries (e.g. Brazil, China, India, Indonesia, Russia) and APEC economies) will cover a wide range of issues regarding science and technology indicators. It is organised jointly by the OECD Centre for Co-operation with Non-members (CCNM) and the Australian government with the co-operation of APEC. It will serve as a forum for OECD Member and non-member economies to exchange experiences and foster co-operation on the development of science and technology statistics and indicators according to OECD standards, as well as to explore the development of new indicators for knowledge-based economies.

Representatives from the OECD Secretariat and Member countries made presentations on current work undertaken under the auspices of the OECD Group of National Experts on Science and Technology Indicators ( NESTI ) for building a new generation of science and technology indicators, notably in the areas of innovation performance and diffusion of knowledge and technology.

Major non-member science and technology players, in particular those having a well-developed science and technology statistical system, presented the current status of their work and the prospects for further developments on existing or new indicators.

Non-member APEC economies presented work in progress in the area of science and technology statistics and indicators with emphasis on issues related to the improvement of international comparability and/or to the development of indicators that better correspond to their specific policy requirements.

A special session was devoted to possible future co-operation between the OECD and APEC, with the aim of expanding the coverage of OECD science and technology databases to non-OECD APEC economies.
