The National Innovation Systems (NIS) project explores how governments can strengthen their innovation systems.

The project aims to develop and test a conceptual framework for analysing the processes of knowledge creation, distribution and use in national systems of innovation. It seeks to map and compare knowledge flows in national systems of innovation with a view to developing new technology and innovation policy approaches for the knowledge-based economy .

The NIS project revolves around two key activities:

1 - Focus groups which study themes relevant to the development of policy for national innovation systems:

• Innovative firms and networks (lead countries: Austria and Australia).
  
  
  
• Clusters (lead country: the Netherlands).
  
  
  
• Mobility of human resources (lead country: Norway).
  
  
  

2 - Benchmarking industry-science relationships .
