Much of the early development and recent improvements in business tendency and consumer surveys is due to the activities of CIRET - Centre for International Research on economic Tendency Surveys.

The European Commission  - more specifically the Directorate General for Economic and Financial Affairs has been active in designing and promoting the harmonised system of business and consumer surveys within the European Union and, together with OECD, in expanding the system to transition and developing countries.
