Minister of Justice, Luxembourg
Luc Frieden was born in Luxembourg on September 16, 1963.
After his primary and secondary school education in Luxembourg, he studied law at the University of Paris I (Panthéon-Sorbonne) where he graduated in 1986 with a “maîtrise” in business law. He is Master of Comparative Law and Legal Philosophy of the University of Cambridge, U.K. (1987) and Master of Laws of Harvard Law School, U.S.A. (1988).
From 1989 to 1998, he worked as an attorney-at-law in Luxembourg. During the same period, he taught constitutional law at the University Centre of Luxembourg. From 1981 to 1994, he also was a regular commentator on legal and foreign affairs topics on Radio Luxembourg.
In 1994, he participated in the general elections in Luxembourg and was elected to Parliament. He served as member of the Luxembourg Parliament from 1994 to 1998, where he acted as Chairman of the Finance Committee and Chairman of the Committee on Constitutional Affairs.
In 1998, at the age of 34, he was appointed Minister of Justice and Minister of Budget in the Luxembourg Government. He was reappointed to those functions after the general elections of 1999 and 2004. He has also served as Minister of Defence from 2004 to 2006. In the present Government, Luc Frieden is Minister of Justice and Minister of the Treasury. Since 1998, he also serves as the Luxembourg Governor of the World Bank.
Luc Frieden is married and has two children, born in 1994 and 1996.
