Loïc Fauchon

Loïc Fauchon
Chairman, World Water Council

Hailing from Brittany, Loïc Fauchon has lived in the South of France for more than forty years.  Earning a degree in 1970 from the Institut d’Études Politiques d’Aix-en-Provence, he then prepared his Doctorate in Economics and Tourism law.

Initially, he followed an eclectic path in civil service. A path that led him from the Verdon Union to the Regional Council of Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur, and then on to the General Council of Bouches-du-Rhône and the General Secretariat of the city of Marseilles, while occupying the position of cabinet director of the Mayor of Marseilles’ Office.

This propensity for public service once again manifested itself as he became Mayor of Trets, a commune in the Bouches-du-Rhône, from 1989 to 1997.

In 1991 he was General Director of the Société des Eaux de Marseille (SEM), taking on the rôle of Managing Director in 1997 heading a group of 16 companies with a total of 2 500 employees.

He understands the vital importance of water after undertaking several missions throughout the world, in particular in Sub-Saharan Africa in the framework of "Trans Sahara", a humanitarian association he founded in 1977 to come to the aid of populations in emergency situations.

The humanitarian dimension was further developed by the creation of a structure called “Waterhelp” within SEM which responds to crisis situations as well as being involved in development.

This vocation for the “cause for water” became evident at an international level through active participation in the World Water Council.

Loïc Fauchon has chaired the World Water Council since January 2005, and thus directly contributed to the organization of the World Water Forums of Marrakech (1997), The Hague (2000), Kyoto (2003), Mexico City (2006) and Istanbul (2009). This Council, with its headquarters in Marseille, is a genuine “Voice of Water” and has brought together nearly 350 member organizations of more than 70 countries since in inception in 1995.

Married and father of three children, he was born on 20 June 1948.
