Jon Cunliffe is the Second Permanent Secretary at H M Treasury, Managing Director of the International and Finance Directorate and a member of the Treasury Management Board. The International and Finance Directorate is responsible for UK macroeconomic policy, international and EU policy and financial services. Jon is a Treasury representative on the Monetary Policy Committee of the Bank of England; the UK’s G7 Deputy; the UK Government’s representative on the EU’s Economic and Finance Committee, a member of the OECD’s WP3 Committee and chair of the EFC Sub-Committee on IMF and related issues. Jon was previously Managing Director of the Treasury’s Finance, Regulation and Industry Directorate, responsible for Treasury’s relations with industry, public private partnerships, the Treasury’s Enterprise and Growth Unit, financial services regulation and the legislation to underpin the Financial Services Authority. Jon joined the civil service in 1980 and spent the early part of his career in the Departments of Environment and Transport. His career at the Treasury has included work on EU and international finance issues; management of the Government’s debt and reserves; and leading the Treasury’s work on operational independence of the Bank of England; European Monetary Union; and the international financial system.
