Professor of International Economic Affairs and former Academic Dean at The Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy, Tufts University
Lisa M. Lynch is the William L. Clayton Professor of International Economic Affairs and former Academic Dean at The Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy, Tufts University. She received her undergraduate degree with honors from Wellesley College, and her M.Sc. and Ph.D. in economics from the London School of Economics. She is also a Research Associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research, the Economic Policy Institute, and IZA in Bonn Germany. From 1995-1997 she was the Chief Economist at the U.S. Department of Labor and she has been a faculty member at M.I.T., The Ohio State University, and the University of Bristol. Her awards and honors include the William L. Clayton Chair in International Economic Affairs, The Instituto per la Riconstruzione Industriale Career Development Chair in Industrial Relations, Tufts University Outstanding Faculty Award, The Fletcher School’s James Paddock Teaching Award, M.I.T. Graduate Student Council Teaching Award, Top Ten M.I.T. Professors for Undergraduate Teaching, The Ohio State University Pacesetter Award Commendation for Research, and the Peggy Howard Memorial Scholarship for Graduate Studies in Economics. Professor Lynch is currently Deputy Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston, Chair of the American Economics Association Committee on the Status of Women in the Economics Profession, and Co-Chair of the National Academy of Sciences Panel on Measuring Business Formation, Dynamics and Performance. She has been a member of the President’s Advisory Board on Expanding Training Opportunities, the National Academy of Sciences’ Committee on Monitoring Labor Standards, the Academic Advisory Group for the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston, the Board of Senior Scholars for the U.S. Department of Education's National Center on the Educational Quality of the Workforce, the U.S. Department of Labor's National Longitudinal Survey Technical Review Committee, the Expert Panel for the US Department of Labor’s Strategic Research Plan for the Workforce Investment Act, and the Census Bureau’s Boston Data Research Center Advisory Board. She was a Co-Editor of the Journal of Labor Economics from 1993-2002 and an Associate Editor of Labour Economics: An International Journal from 1991-1996. She has been a visiting scholar in the U.K., Sweden, and Italy and consulted for international organizations such as the World Bank, the OECD and the ILO. Professor Lynch has published more than 50 papers and books on issues such as the impact of technological change and workplace practices (especially education and training) on productivity and wages, the determinants of youth unemployment, and the school-to-work transition. Her research has been sponsored by the National Science Foundation, the U.S. Department of Labor, the U.S. Department of Education, the MacArthur Foundation, the Russell Sage Foundation, and the Ford Foundation.
