John Murray was born in Manchester UK and studied Geography at Oxford University. After a short period in academic life at Durham University (UK), he joined the permanent staff of the Council of Europe. He first set up a programme of intergovernmental cooperation on demography. Since then, he has successively been appointed Secretary of the European Committee on Migration, Coordinator of Activities on Roma/Gypsies and is presently Head of the Social Policy Department and Executive Secretary of the European Committee for Social Cohesion.
