Director, The Gallup Organisation - Europe
Robert Manchin is the Director of The Gallup Organisation Europe. He is also a professor at the College of Europe in Bruges, Belgium and is actively involved in a number of graduate university programmes in Europe. At present, he leads the European Commission Flash Eurobarometer, the largest on-going survey measurement project, serving the information needs of European public policy making. He is also the Coordinator of the International Consortium for the European Crime, Safety and Well-being Survey and the Head of the European Observatory of Human Safety and Security. He was responsible for carrying-out the last wave of European Working Conditions Survey, a 33-country face-to-face survey. As a social scientist, Robert Manchin began his career at Institute of Sociology at the Hungarian Academy of Sciences in Budapest, where he was the principal investigator on various projects regarding value orientation, private entrepreneurship, life-course analysis, and methodology. Between 1982 and 1986, he was visiting professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where he taught demography and research methods. As a consultant, he worked with various international organisations in the field of evidence-based policy research. He o-authored a number of books and published several articles in social science journals on social indicators, subjective well-being, quality of life, social stratification, urban and regional development, urban social policy, and housing. Robert Manchin is a Trustee of the Brussels-based think-tank “Friends of Europe”, the President of a Hungarian NGO for a Smoke-free Environment, and is the Chairman of the Europa Nova Foundation with operations in Luxembourg, Hungary and Croatia. He is a former member of the Hungarian State Philharmonic Orchestra. At the local elections of 2006, he was elected to be the Deputy Mayor of Vallus (pop. size 132), Hungary.
