Jan Fischer
President of the Czech Statistical Office

Born in 1951 in a family of professional mathematicians working in the areas of statistics and insurance business. Father, as a research worker at the Institute of Mathematics of the Academy of Sciences, devoted himself to mathematical and statistical applications in genetics, selective growing and medicine.
The President of the Czech Statistical Office graduated from the University of Economics in Prague, field statistics and econometrics, in 1974. Mr Fischer’s work with the central statistical office began just after his graduation. He was appointed as Vice-President of the Federal Statistical Office in 1990, then, after the split of the Federation, as Vice-President of the Czech Statistical Office in 1993. From the beginning of the 1990s Mr Fischer headed the teams responsible for the processing of the results of parliamentary and local elections. Among his terms of reference was also liaison with Eurostat, the Statistical Office of the European Communities. In spring 2001 Mr Fischer was engaged in a mission of the International Monetary Fund to explore the possibilities of creating a statistical service in Eastern Timor.
After being removed from the position of the First Vice-President of the Czech Statistical Office in September 2000, Mr Fischer worked with the Taylor Nelson Sofres Factum Company as Production Director. From March 2002 up to his appointment as President of the Czech Statistical Office Mr Fischer was the head research worker of the Faculty of Information Science and Statistics of the University of Economics in Prague.
Mr Fischer is married for the second time, father of three children.
