Mark Manto is a graduate of University College Dublin, with a first class honours B.Sc. degree in Science. Following his degree, he studied for a Ph.D. for a period, while he also received a Postgraduate certificate in Research Methods from the Department of Statistics, University College Dublin. Mr Manto then joined the local government authority of his area, South Dublin County Council. Following this he joined the Central Statistics Office (CSO) as a Statistician in July 2001. He has spent time on secondment to the National Development Plan Gender Equality Unit, which is based in the Department of Justice, Equality and Law Reform. In this Unit he has gained experience working over a wide range of issues relating to gender statistics; including transport, housing, agriculture, employment, business and entrepreneurship. He has undertaken research and produced reports on a range of topics to close a number of previously identified data gaps in gender statistics in Ireland. He has also created databanks of gender disaggregated statistics relevant to the broad range of policy areas in the National Development Plan. He was active in work to identify and prioritise both data gaps and indicators currently in use used/required across several Government Department in a Steering Group on Social and Equality Statistics (SGSES) which included gender disaggregated data. He has been involved with the creation of an international databank of gender disaggregated statistics through the work of the United Nations Statistical Commission and Economic Commission for Europe.
