Jeffrey Tryens
Director of the Oregon Progress Board

For over thirty years, Jeffrey Tryens has devoted himself to shaping and implementing public policy on a wide range of social, environmental and economic issues.

As executive director of the Oregon Progress Board, Tryens helps implement the state's visionary twenty-year strategic vision, Oregon Shines. Since its inception, the Board has focused on developing a system of benchmarks and other indicators that measure the state's progress toward achieving the goals of Oregon Shines.

Before coming to Oregon, Jeff was the deputy director of the Center for Policy Alternatives in Washington, D.C. He has also worked as a journalist and a transportation planner.

Tryens has written or edited over twenty books and reports. Most recently, he co-authored "Achieving Better Health Outcomes: The Oregon Benchmark Experience." Jeff holds degrees in civil engineering from Drexel University and Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a Masters in Public Administration from the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University.

Jeff is the 2004 recipient of the Donald Stone Award for significant continuous contribution to the field of state and local public administration from the American Society for Public Administration, Section on Intergovernmental Administration and Management.
