Pierre Lefèbvre is Emeritus Professor of Medicine at the University of Liège, Belgium, where he has been Chairman of Medicine( 1988-2000 ) and Head of the Division of Diabetes, Nutrition and Metabolic Disorders ( 1970-2000 ). His research has been devoted to the physiology and pathophysiology of metabolic regulations with particular emphasis on insulin, glucagon and physical exercise. He has performed numerous studies on the pathogeny and treatment of Type 2 diabetes and obesity.  Professor Lefèbvre is a member and former President of the Royal Academy of Medicine in Belgium, member of the National Academy of Medicine in France and the Academia Europaea; he is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians. He has received numerous international awards and been elected Doctor honoris causa in five Universities in Europe and North America. Pierre Lefèbvre has been President of the Belgian Diabetes Association (ABD), the ALFEDIAM and the European Association for the Study of Diabetes ( EASD ). He served the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) as Vice-President, (1991-1997), Chairman of the IDF Education Foundation (from its beginning to 1997) and President-elect (2000-2003). He became President of the IDF in August 2003.
