Commissioner of the Environment and Sustainable Development

Johanne Gélinas is the second Commissioner of the Environment and Sustainable Development. She was appointed to the position in August 2000.

Ms. Gélinas completed undergraduate studies in human geography at the University of Quebec at Montreal and subsequently earned a Master's degree in environmental sciences from the same institution.

For over 10 years, in Quebec, she served as a Commissioner of the Bureau d'audiences publiques sur l'environnement - BAPE (Quebec Environmental Public Hearing Board) where she chaired many public hearings and mediations. She also sat on different committees and boards of directors.

In 1998, she was invited by Environment Canada and Transport Canada to join the Public Education and Outreach Issue Table on Climate Change and the Transportation Table of the National Secretariat on Climate Change, which she chaired its Passenger Transport Committee.

During the last two years, she was also a senior advisor to the President of the Canadian Pulp and Paper Association and she chaired the Quebec Ministry of Health and Social Services' Advisory Committee on Toxicological Risk Assessment in reviewing environmental issues related to human health.
