Humayun Akhtar Khan
Minister for Commerce, Pakistan
Humayun Akhtar Khan, Pakistan’s Minister for Commerce since 2002, has spearheaded business and commercial reforms in the country during a phase of extraordinary economic and trade turnaround. This period recorded exponential growth in exports and revenues. Far-reaching structural reforms, underpinned by business support institutions and mechanisms, are the key features of this era. Earlier, as minister for investment (1997-1999), Mr. Khan was responsible for liberalising the investment regime of the country. At present Mr. Khan is playing a pivotal and leadership role towards the success of the Doha Development Round of the WTO. Mr. Khan is an elected member of the national parliament, a confidence that his urban constituency in Lahore has repeatedly reposed in him since the last four general elections. Electoral backing from an industrial and business metropolis of Pakistan has helped shape his reform programme. Apart from political representation, Mr. Khan oversees a family Trust that provides medical, educational and training services for vulnerable people. Born in 1955, Mr. Khan is a Fellow of the US Society of Actuaries and the Canadian Institute of Actuaries. He holds a Masters in Actuarial and Business Mathematics from the University of Manitoba, Canada, with concentration in investments and risk calculations. His vision, backed by continued interest in academics and scholarship, is the development of a business-led prosperous Pakistan, robustly integrated into the world economy. Mr. Khan pursues physical fitness. He is married and has two daughters and a son.
