Enrico Giovannini
Chief Statistician and Director, Statistics Directorate, OECD
Born in Rome on 6th June 1957, he graduated in Economics from “La Sapienza” University of Rome in March 1981. He continued his studies at the Institute of Economic Policy at the same Faculty, specialising in econometric analysis.
In December 1982 he was employed by the National Institute of Statistics (Istat), assigned primarily to the “Research Department”, and later to the “National Accounts Department” where he performed several tasks, taking care of studies on the Italian economic short-term dynamic and participating in several research projects.
He was a consultant at the Ministry of Treasury (on behalf of which he managed the construction of two econometric models) and also at the Confindustria (Italian Manufacturers’ Association) working on the development of its econometric model.
In December 1989 he became research director at the National Institute for Short-term Economic Analysis, where he took care, particularly, of monetary and financial analyses. In January 1992 he moved to National Institute of Statistics (Istat), where he headed the Service for Econometric Studies. He was also in charge of the creation of the first two versions of the “Istat Annual Report” (1992 and 1993).
From December 1993 to May 1997 he was head of the “National Accounts and Economic Analysis Department”; from September 1994 to December 1995 he was acting head of the “Dissemination and Data Bank Department“. In December 1996 he was appointed Director for Economic Statistics.
In September 2000 he was appointed Director of Statistics and Chief Statistician of OECD: he took up the post on 1 January 2001.
He is member of several Committees of the European Commission and of other International Organisations. From February 1995 to March 1999 he was member of the executive body of the Committee for the monetary, financial and balance of payments statistics (CMFB). During the six-months of the Italian presidency at the European Union (January-June 1996) he was the chairman of the Working Groups of the European Council “Financial matters” and “Economic Matters” about statistical subjects.
He is member of the Italian Statistical Society and of the International Statistical Institute. He took part in the Council of the Interuniversity Committee for Econometrics (CIDE) and of the Council of the Italian Statistical Society. He was a member of the strategic Committee of the Ministry of Treasury for the introduction of the Euro in Italy and of several scientific Committees at Italian universities and research institutes.
He is a full professor of economic statistics at the University of Rome “Tor Vergata”. He has published many articles in economics and statistics, and has edited several books.
