Marie Smith is the President of AARP, the largest non-profit organization with the largest membership in the world (35 million members). AARP’s vision is of a society in which everyone ages with dignity and purpose, and is dedicated to enhancing quality of life for all as we age. AARP leads positive social change and delivers value to our members through information, advocacy and service and is also striving to become a leading voice on global ageing issues.

Marie Smith assumed the position of AARP President in April 2004. She was elected and served as President-elect of the Association in 2002 - 2004 and previously served AARP as a member of the Board Audit and Finance Committee, treasurer of the AARP Foundation Board of Directors, chair of the AARP National Legislative Council, and a spokesperson for the AARP's Women's Initiative Programme.

Prior to retirement, Mrs. Smith held several senior positions within the US Social Security Administration, including director of manpower management and organization planning and management analyst.

Mrs. Smith has received numerous citations and awards including the Woman of Excellence Award from the Commission on the Status of Women and the Commissioner's Citation from the Social Security Administration. In 2004, she was named one of the most influential black Americans by “Ebony Magazine”.
