The rapid and massive increase in rural-to-urban worker flows to the coast of China has drawn recent attention to the welfare of migrants working in urban regions, particularly to their working conditions and pay; serious concern is raised regarding pay discrimination against rural migrants.
While the immediate imperative is to tackle the financial crisis and to steer the economy through the current downturn, there are also a number of longer-term challenges that need to be addressed to foster a robust and sustainable recovery. In particular assistance for young and low skilled workers needs to be enhanced and the performance of the education sector also needs to be improved.
Speaking at the G8 Summit Consultation with Social Partners in Rome on 26 June 2009, Mr Gurría urged the G8, BIAC, TUAC and OECD to join forces to help governments make the best use of labour market and social policies.
The objective of the workshop is to discuss migration issues in Central America, focusing on themes which have received only limited attention so far, namely the governance of migration and the links between migration and labour markets.
