Milan Pogačnik was appointed Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Food in November 2008, having previously held the position in April-December 2004. He is also a professor in the Veterinary Faculty of the University of Ljubljana and a member of the Management Board of the European Food Safety Agency (EFSA).


Dr Pogačnik was honoured with the Order of Freedom of the Republic of Slovenia in 1999 for his contribution to scientific education and work regarding the development, implementation and popularisation of Slovenian veterinary medicine. He has also received with the Slovenian Veterinary Association’s Bleiweis Award and an honorary doctorate from the University of Skopje.

In 2000 the Government of the People’s Republic of China gave Dr Pogačnik its highest award for a foreign scientist for his work in the development of research and technology programmes for the sustainable use of abandoned agricultural land involving animals.
