PREGEC meeting, Conakry, 18-20 September 2017

Country representatives and food security experts from across the region prepared a half-term assessment of the 2017-18 agro-pastoral campaign in the Sahel and West Africa. Overall, the outlook is good. The regional consultation is part of a meeting cycle of the Regional System for the Prevention and Management of Food Crises (PREGEC). The next regional consultation will be held on 27-29 November in Bamako and will provide a detailed analysis of the current and projected food and nutrition situation.

KEY POINTS

  • The region’s 2017-18 harvests are projected to be average to good. Grain harvests are estimated to be between 66 and 73 million tonnes, root and tuber crops between 166 and 171 million tonnes and an increase is expected for legumes including cowpeas and groundnuts.
  • Markets have been generally well stocked during the 2017 lean period except in the Lake Chad basin where civil unrest continues to disrupt the flow of goods.
  • The food and nutrition situation is improving overall with the arrival of first season harvests in coastal countries and early harvests in the Sahel. It remains critical in the Lake Chad basin, northern Mali and the Liptako-Gourma area. Humanitarian, food and nutrition assistance must be maintained and strengthened.
  • Interactive mapping tool of the Cadre harmonisé analysis (CH): Within the RPCA communications strategy, CILSS and the SWAC/OECD Secretariat are working on a data visualisation tool to make the CH analysis more easily accessible to all stakeholders. PREGEC participants welcomed the initiative and provided feedback.
  • Survey on the Cadre harmonisé analysis (CH): CILSS is conducting a survey aimed at improving the CH analysis cycle and the quality of data collection. Country representatives provided feedback and shared information on current challenges.
  • A calendar of joint country missions (government, CILSS and partners) has been adopted. Experts will assess the campaign and analyse the food and nutrition situation at country level. The regional consolidation of the analysis is scheduled to take place from 20-25 November.
