Title
Student Company ARTemis-Schüler-GmbH
Rationale and general information

The ARTemis-Schüler-GmbH project is a students‘ enterprise in “Evangelisches Ratsgymnasium“, a school offering higher secondary education in the city of Erfurt, East Germany, run by the Protestant Church with almost 600 students between 11 and 19 years of age. The initiative was started by eight students who wanted to combine their interest in arts and their wish to strengthen the focus of applied learning in school.

The Evangelische Ratsgymnasium seized this opportunity to foster transversal activities linking art to economics and project management while enhancing their public image and creating opportunities for collaboration between the school and its local environment.

This “light touch” gives the students a great amount of freedom while securing a safe and steady environment.

Activities

ARTemis-Schüler-GmbH is a student company based on voluntary participation of the students.

The business idea of ARTemis as an “artothek” is to rent art products and works of art created by the students managing the structure themselves, other students of the school in art courses, in school projects, or those who have personal artistic activities. The first customers of ARTemis have been student’s parents and their circles of friends, and the allocation of benefits is decided amongst the students themselves. In the last nine years, great importance is given to environmentally compatible material and to rent and reuse art products.

The students have given a legal form to ARTemis similar to that of the most common German SME legal form of “Gesellschaft mit beschränkter Haftung” (GmbH). This implies that each member of ARTemis has “one vote” in the assembly which has to take place once a year, as a minimum, during which a activity and financial report is presented.

ARTemis-S-GmbH developed as a students’ extra curriculum enterprise with a voluntary participation that is nonetheless promoted by the school’s administration for its twofold educational benefits:

  • Outside the enterprise: ARTemis-students are learning organization, time-management, agreements, cooperation, communication and advertising, by getting into contact with costumers and supporters outside the school in „real life“.
  • Inside the enterprise: ARTemis-students learn how to manage projects, hold meetings, instruct fellow students, delegate the tasks, organize feedbacks and evaluations.

In addition to these transversal learning experience ARTemis-students practise their understanding of art and aesthetic effect and learn to discover and encourage talents of their fellow students
