Lex Bouter was born in Rotterdam in 1956. After obtaining an MSc in Medical Biology at Utrecht University, he lectured for several years at teacher training colleges in Tilburg and Utrecht. In 1984 he joined the Department of Epidemiology and Healthcare Research at Maastricht University, where he trained as an epidemiologist. His contributions to the Dutch Health Sciences curriculum resulted in the 1988 publication of a textbook on epidemiology, the fifth revised edition of which was published in 2005. In 1992 Bouter took up a tenured position as Professor of Epidemiology and Scientific Director of a research institute with a focus on primary care and public health EMGO Institute at the VU University Medical Center in Amsterdam. His teaching activities between 1992 and 2006 centred on the MSc and PhD Epidemiology programmes at the EMGO Institute. His research activities in that period consisted mainly of supervising PhD students and postdoctoral researchers. From 2001 until 2006 he also chaired of one of the six divisions at the VU University Medical Center. In 2006 he was appointed Rector Magnificus (Vice-Chancellor) of VU University Amsterdam. At the same time he became a member of the Executive Board of VU University Amsterdam and Windesheim University of Applied Sciences. Lex Bouter is author or co-author of more than 460 international scientific publications, which have been cited more than 13,500 times (h-index of 63). He has supervised about 70 successful PhD theses.
