Ellen Hazelkorn

 

Professor Ellen Hazelkorn is the Director of Research and Enterprise, and Dean of the Graduate School, Dublin Institute of Technology; she also leads the Higher Education Policy Research Unit (HEPRU). She is a Consultant to the OECD Programme on Institutional Management of Higher Education (IMHE), and is associated with its Centre for Co-operation with Non-Members, and with the International Association of Universities (IAU). Ellen is Rapporteur for the EU Expert Group on 'Assessment of University-based Research', and a member of the Irish Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences Foresight Working Group.
Ellen is a member of the Editorial Boards of Higher Education Management and Policy (OECD) and Higher Education Policy (IAU), and the International Ranking Expert Group (IREG). She is on the Executive of the Dean and European Academic Network (DEAN). Ellen has worked with universities/university associations around the world, including New Zealand, Australia, Netherlands, Denmark, Belgium, and Jamaica.
She was formerly Director and Dean of the Faculty of Applied Arts, DIT (1995-2008), and Company Secretary, Contemporary Music Centre (2001-2007). Ellen has been Board Member on Higher Education Equality Unit (1996-2002) and the European League of Institutes of the Arts (2000-2002), and Deputy Chairperson, Centre for International Technology and Education (1996-2000). She was awarded a BA and PhD from the University of Wisconsin, Madison, and the University of Kent, Canterbury, respectively.
Professor Hazelkorn has published on Irish politics and society; digital technologies, gender, work practices and the cultural industries; relations between the media and the state; and higher education policy. Developing Research in New Institutions was published by OECD, 2005.
She is currently leading an international research project on the Impact and Influence of League Tables and Ranking Systems on Higher Education Decision-Making and Academic Behaviour in association with IMHE and IAU [http://www.oecd.org/edu/imhe/rankings]. Ellen is also working with the Institute for Higher Education Policy on a ‘New Agenda for College and University Ranking’.
