The Autonomous Province of Trento is one of the two provinces which together form Trentino-Alto Adige/ Südtirol - itself one of five autonomous regions within the Italian State. Spread over a large part of the Dolomites and southern Alps, the region is renowned for its mountainous scenery and landscapes, within easy reach of the provincial capital Trento.

The Province enjoys a substantial degree of autonomy in a number of sectors, including health and education, and is free to develop its own welfare system and infrastructure. The tourism sector is the mainstay of the provincial economy and, despite the predominantly mountainous terrain within the province, the agricultural sector is also of great importance, uniting a wide network of farms within its well-developed system of co-operatives.
