Welcome to the OECD World Forum news and events site. The OECD World Forum on "Statistics, Knowledge and Policy" is a co-ordinated world wide attempt to study and improve the nexus between statistics and policy-making.
GDP is the best-recognised measure of economic performance in the world, often used as a generic indicator of progress. However, the relationship between economic growth as measured by GDP and other dimensions of societal progress is not straightforward.
The OECD is to work with other international organisations and partners to develop a new approach to measuring how societies are changing by using high quality, reliable statistics to assess progress in a range of areas affecting citizens’ quality of life.
The OECD and the Istituto Nazionale di Statistica (ISTAT) will organise a seminar on "Dynamic Graphics for Presenting Statistical Indicators" on 5-6 March 2007 in Rome, Italy. The meeting is about the art of making statistical indicators understandable and appealing to modern audiences. Recent years have seen a growing awareness world wide of the importance of new techniques to disseminate and present data.
The OECD, the Bank of Italy, the Centre for Economic and International Studies (CEIS) of the University of Rome “Tor Vergata” and the Joint Research Centre (JRC) of the European Commission will host a conference to address the question “Is happiness measurable and what do those measures mean for policy?” The event will take place April 2 and 3 at the University of Rome “Tor Vergata”, and the outcomes of this conference will flow through to influence the OECD’s World Forum.
