As a follow up to the Outlook on Industrial Biotechnology Workshop organised in January 2010, a workshop entitled “Building an Efficient Bio-Based Economy through Industrial Biotechnology” was held in St Petersburg.
For many of today’s new biomedical innovations, the distinctions between different forms of medical products such as drugs, diagnostics and devices no longer apply. Biomedicine also tends to realize its potential today through process innovation, even more than product innovation.
This workshop, held in Paris, sought to develop a vision and medium-term strategy for work on green research, technology and innovation.
The main objectives of the panel were to launch the report from Montreal Workshop entitled “Towards the Development of OECD Best Practices for Assessing the Sustainability of Bio-based Products” and to communicate its main conclusions.
Many governments are working to develop improved methods of distributing public funds for research, in order to raise research quality and support the development of research in strategically important areas.
The key goal of the current work is to identify further means (e.g. international guidelines, policy recommendations) to implement the 2004 OECD Science and Technology Ministers mandate on “Biotechnology for Sustainable Growth and Development” .
This document compiles the operational plans 2009-2012 for the eight projects of the WPMN and it is published on the responsibility of the Joint Meeting of the Chemicals Committee and the Working Party on Chemicals, Pesticides and Biotechnology of the OECD.
Workshop discussions were structured around a set of issues papers – one for each of the sessions. The workshop was set up as a working roundtable discussion. 50 participants familiar with data sources for industrial biotechnology attended the workshop.
This workshop, sponsored by Japan, Germany, the Netherlands and Norway under the auspices of the OECD Committee for Scientific and Technological Policy (CSTP).
The findings and views emerging from the workshop will contribute to the development of the OECD Innovation Strategy to be presented to OECD Ministers in 2010.
