    Workshop on Minding Neurotechnology: Delivering responsible innovation for health and well-being

    This workshop, held in Shanghai on 6-7 September 2018, focused on exploring some of the unique ethical, legal and policy challenges raised by health-related applications of brain science and its integration into cutting-edge neurotechnologies. A key aim was to provide a forum for innovators to discuss strategies for delivering responsible innovation in neurotechnology for health and well-being applications.

    Meeting Policy Challenges for a Sustainable Bioeconomy

    This publication investigates key aspects surrounding the sustainability of bioeconomy development: the use of biomass as feedstock for future production;  the design and building of biorefineries for the manufacture of a range of fuels, chemicals and materials, and also for electricity generation; and the use of biotechnologies such as synthetic biology, metabolic engineering and gene editing.Today more than 50 countries have a dedicated bioeconomy strategy or related policies. While the bioeconomy is consistent with sustainability policy (examples are the circular economy, the UN Sustainable Development Goals, green growth, re-industrialisation, rural regeneration, climate change mitigation), synergies must be ensured to avoid over-exploitation of natural resources and conflicting global needs.

    Trend analysis of science, technology and innovation policies for biotechnology, nanotechnology and converging technologies (BNCTs)

    This paper aims to analyse policies pertaining to nanotechnology and biotechnology over time with regard to their directionality and technology specificity. The analysis provides some evidence that technology-push policies are favoured for young technology fields, while application-pull policies tend to be applied to more mature fields.
