LEED Programme (Local Economic and Employment Development)

Conference on Women’s Entrepreneurship and Sustainable Tourism in the Caribbean Region, Santo Domingo, 11-12 January 2006

By invitation of the Government of the Dominican Republic, and with the support of the Italian Government, the OECD Centre for Entrepreneurship, SMEs and Local Development (CFE) is organising this two-day conference as a follow-up to the expert workshop held in the Caribbean Region in April 2005.  This is a joint event of the OECD/CFE LEED Programme and the locally-based Global Foundation for Democracy and Development (FUNGLODE), in collaboration with the SME and Entrepreneurship Division and the Tourism Programme of the OECD.

This conference will address the importance of women’s participation in business as driver for economic development and social inclusion.  Particular interest will be given to the role of women in the Caribbean Region where activity rates have been increasing in the last two decades.  This conference will also highlight the importance of tourism as a key economic and services sector in most of the Caribbean economies. Challenging environmental and economic changes urge to develop economic activities around the high-volume mass tourism industry in order to enhance the local business environment.

The working languages will be English, French and Spanish with simultaneous interpretation. Policy makers, authorities, women entrepreneurs associations, tourism promotion agencies, experts and practitioners from Caribbean and OECD countries are invited to take part in these debates which will contribute to finalise and implement the Caribbean Rim SME and Local Development Initiative to be launched in 2006.

To participate, please complete the registration form and send it to Gabriela Miranda by Thursday 5 January. Please note that, unfortunately, the OECD is not in a position to cover travel and accommodation.  Participants are invited to attend at their own expense.
