Annual Survey of Large Pension Funds

Report on pension funds’ long-term investments

18/10/2013 - The Annual Survey of Large Pension Funds and Public Pension Reserve Funds is designed to illuminate the role that large institutional investors can play in providing a source of stable long-term capital. The survey was presented to G20 Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors at their October 2013 meeting in Washington and is consistent with the objectives and directions set forth in their February 2013 communiqué.

The G20 Study Group on Financing for Investment is now working on a report titled “Trends in Global Asset Allocation of Institutional Investors” due for completion in 2014. This report will further expand on the initial findings and policy conclusions presented in the survey.

The survey includes 56 retirement schemes, consisting of a mix of defined benefit and defined contribution pension plans (mainly public sector funds, but also corporate funds) that together total USD 3.1 trillion. Data for 49 schemes were provided by the large pension funds directly, the other 7 coming from publicly available sources. This information is presented in combination with the OECD Public Pension Reserve Funds survey carried out at the same time. Altogether, data was compiled for 86 institutional investors from more than 35 countries around the world including some non-OECD countries such as Brazil, Peru, Nigeria, and South Africa, accounting for over USD 9.7 trillion of assets under management.

The survey monitors and compares the investment behaviour, operating costs, and performances of the largest institutional investors in each region or country covered and analyses in greater depth the general trends observed at a national level. This survey is based on a qualitative and quantitative questionnaire sent directly to Large Pension Funds and Public Pension Reserve Funds. It is part of the OECD Project on Institutional Investors and Long-term Investment. The insights and detailed investment information collected complement the administrative data gathered  through the Global Pension Statistics Project
