AEBR - www.aebr.net
The Association of European Border Regions (AEBR), based in Gronau (Germany) close to the Netherlands border, aims to strengthen the collaboration between European border regions as well as to defend their interests. For the past few years, the AEBR has closely followed the development of cross-border co-operation in West Africa. Several of its members have expressed the desire to encourage exchanges between European and African experiences. For example, the European Border Region of Extremaduro announced that it would contribute financially to the first Africa-Europe Conference on Cross-Border Co-operation organised by the SWAC. Since 2004, the SWAC and the DNF have been participating in the AEBR’s General Assemblies. The former AEBR Secretary General joined the recent AU experts meeting in Bamako to provide his point of view on the financing of border co-operation and the need to create a regional fund.

FEWS NET - www.fews.net
Given the SWAC’s commitment and interest in food security issues, several joint activities have been carried out with the Famine Early Warning Systems Network (FEWS NET) through its Regional Office for West Africa. FEWS NET is one of the key food security actors in Africa. Following the FCPN meetings in 2005, the CILSS, FEWS NET and the SWAC have provided information tools and assistance to decision-makers as well as organised press conferences. In 2006, FEWS NET, the SWAC as well as other partner institutions carried out strategic thinking on cross-border trade in the Kano – Katsina – Maradi (K2M) zone, located between Niger and Nigeria. The results of this analysis led to the setting up of a pilot experience on cross-border cooperation and food security in this zone. Thus, FEWS NET’s early warning system information is taken into account in the Information Note on Food Security distributed monthly by the SWAC. FEWS NET also is an active participating member of the Food Crisis Prevention Network (FCPN).
