Local development benefits from staging global events

The LEED governing board is meeting in Paris on 20-21 May to review ongoing work including LEED’s contribution to the OECD Green Growth Strategy and the OECD Innovation Strategy; LEED projects on Skills for Competitiveness and Training and Skills Development in SMEs. Presentations and progress reports on these activities and others will be made by LEED Delegates, high-level experts and the LEED Secretariat.

On 21 May, for the second time, a joint session has been organised for LEED Delegates and Partners. This time, the session will focus on Local Development Benefits from Staging Global Events. LEED research has shown that the most successful host countries and cities have a long-term plan that the event helps them to implement, and a dedicated management effort aimed at securing the benefits and the legacy for some time before the event is staged, and for several years afterwards. International events which are hosted well can become a catalyst for local development and global reach.

Building on the report Local Development Benefits from Staging Global Events, LEED is working with the Department of Communities and Local Government in the United Kingdom to contribute to the creation of a strong and sustainable economic and social legacy for the five host boroughs from London 2012.

The joint session will highlight the unique approach taken in the United Kingdom and set it against international experience. The session will explore the economic and social challenges and opportunities presented by the Olympic Games and debate key LEED themes of job creation, skills development, social innovation, entrepreneurship and finance & investment.
