Consumer protection: OECD PISA Financial Literacy Study

The OECD is testing 15 year-olds on their knowledge of personal finances and ability to apply it to their financial situation. Financial literacy and consumer protection are among the key agenda items for the French G20 presidency during 2011.

The OECD Development Centre's Head of regional desks Kiichiro Fukasaku participated as a lead discussant to Session II "Current Pledges to Curb Emissions and National Strategies for Promoting Green Growth" of the two-day International Workshop on "Climate Change and Green Asia". This session aimed to discuss the strategies being formulated/implemented by emerging economies, the economic and developmental benefits of such strategies as well as to identify potential areas for policy intervention.

This report presents the results of an OECD Seminar (OECD, Paris, May 2010) that reviewed various key issues associated with risk reduction through prevention, detection and control of the illegal international trade in agricultural pesticides. The seminar recommend the setting of an OECD network of experts and inspectors knowledgeable and active in fighting illegal trade of pesticides that could be used for rapid exchange of information on suspicious or rejected shipments.

Producer countries are making greater use of export restrictions on industrial raw materials such as timber and rare earths. Food commodity exports have also been restricted in recent years. OECD analysis shows that countries can use more effective and less costly alternatives to export restrictions.

Following the successful official launch of the MENA-OECD Business Council in November 2009 at the MENA-OECD Ministerial Conference in Marrakech, and in view of the strong mandate given to the task forces of the Business Council at the second meeting of the Council in Paris in May 2010, the fourth meeting of the Task Force on Infrastructure and Energy will take place on 15 December 2010 in Paris, building on the three successful meetings already held in April, July and October.
