OECD releases preliminary findings on green growth

Green growth provides opportunities for new green industries, jobs and technologies. The Interim Report of the Green Growth Strategy provides some first insights into how countries can achieve greener growth, and discusses what steps countries have already taken, as well as some of the barriers to transition. It also proposes a framework for green growth strategies to help ensure an efficient shift to more sustainable economies. Also see the overview of the report.

It provides up-to-date information on OECD activities related to biotechnology. The implementation of a feasible Finance Strategy (FS)/Strategic Financial Plan (SFP) is even a bigger challenge than just developing it, as it requires a number of measures to integrate the FS/SFP into the policy framework, foremost into the country development strategy (equivalent of the Poverty Reduction Strategy Paper, PRSP), regional and WSS sector development strategies (if exist) and the budget process, i.e. the Medium-Term Expenditure Framework (MTEF) and annual budgets. OECD assesses costs and effectiveness of emission pledges from Copenhagen Acccord

Many countries have pledged targets or actions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the Copenhagen Accord. New OECD analysis shows that these pledges go towards but are not ambitious enough to limit long-term temperature rise to 2°C. While not cheap, the costs of these pledges are limited compared to expected economic growth. Ambitious global action to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions is not only necessary, but also economically rational. Using market-based instruments to implement the pledges also has the potential to generate sizable fiscal revenues.

The OECD conducts work to provide governments with the analytical basis to develop biodiversity policies that are environmentally-effective, economically-efficient and distributionally-equitable. Within this context, the OECD Working Group on Economic Aspects of Biodiversity (WGEAB) has, for more than a decade, focused on valuation of biodiversity and ecosystem services, and the use of economic instruments, incentive measures and the creation of markets for the sustainable use and conservation of biological diversity.

OECD Environmental Risk Assessment Toolkit

The first version of the OECD Environmental Risk Assessment Toolkit is now available. This Toolkit describes the work flow of environmental risk assessment and management with links to relevant OECD products that can be used in each step of the work flow. This Toolkit provides support for capacity building to relevant stakeholders by improving the access and use of various tools and guidance on risk assessment and management of chemicals developed under the OECD Environment, Health and Safety Programme.

Le rapport intérimaire de la Stratégie pour une croissance verte présente une série de réflexions initiales sur les moyens d’atteindre la croissance verte, et il examine les mesures déjà prises par des pays, ainsi que les obstacles à la transition. Il propose également un cadre d’action pour les stratégies d'une croissance verte afin d’assurer un changement efficace vers des économies plus durables.

(Q)SAR Application Toolbox: Public Discussion Forum on the Internet

An internet-based public discussion forum for users of the OECD (Q)SAR Application Toolbox is now available. The (Q)SAR Application Toolbox is a software application intended to be used by governments, industry and other stakeholders to fill gaps in (eco)toxicity data needed for assessing the hazards of chemicals. On this discussion forum, users of the Toolbox can exchange experience with using the software (tips and tricks), seek guidance, exchange databases, exchange user defined profilers and QSARs, and make suggestions for improvements.
