Roundtable discussion of the OECD's "Consumer Policy Toolkit"

US Federal Trade Commission Chairman Jon Leibowitz welcomed stakeholders and journalists at a roundtable discussion in Washington, DC on the OECD's just-published "Consumer Policy Toolkit". Ambassador Karen Kornbluh and OECD Director for Science, Technology and Industry Andrew Wyckoff highlighted the relevance of this work for policy makers and welcomed questions from the public. World Consumer Rights Day and new ICPEN website

Each year on 15 March, the World Consumer Rights Day is celebrated by organizations, promoting consumer rights and demanding that they are respected all over the world. For this year’s celebrations, the International Consumer Enforcement Protection Network has launched a new website which was co-developed by national and international consumer organisations, including the OECD. It is aimed at  providing consumers with essential information about their rights and facilitating consumer disputes across the borders.

Enhancing the value and effectiveness of environmental claims: protecting and empowering consumers - OECD workshop

Environmental claims have the potential to play an important role in encouraging consumers to make choices which support environmental goals, while rewarding innovative companies for their efforts in this regard. The impact of claims will be reduced, however, to the extent that they are unclear, confusing or fraudulent, diminishing consumer interest and confidence in green products and services. Thus, policymakers are challenged to provide consumers with meaningful information that could influence their behaviour, thereby expanding consumer choices that support sustainable consumption.

Opening a dialogue with India: A joint OECD-India seminar

The aim of the seminar was to exchange experiences focusing on three areas: the impact of the financial and economic crisis on e-government, strengthening leadership and organisation for successful e-government, serving citizens – becoming user-focused in e-government.

ICPHSO International Day on consumer product safety

The OECD will participate in the ICPHSO event, which will be held on 15-18 February 2010, in Washington D.C. During the meeting, the OECD outcomes of an analytic review of cross-border information sharing mechanisms will be shared and discussed. The conclusions of the debate will be then taken into account for the OECD future work on consumer product safety.
