A Consensus Document on compositional considerations for new varieties of CASSAVA (Manihot esculenta), number 18 in the Series on Safety of Novel Foods and Feeds, is now available online. It contains information on key nutrients, anti-nutrients, toxicants and allergens of food and feed obtained from this staple crop of major importance to many tropical-subtropical regions of the world.

A Consensus Document on the Biology of BANANAS and PLANTAINS (Musa spp.), number 48 in the Series on Harmonisation of Regulatory Oversight in Biotechnology, is now available online. It contains useful information for environmental safety assessment of new varieties of this crop which provides staple food and fruits and is of major importance to tropical-subtropical regions worldwide.

Ce rapport examine les différents domaines influant sur le développement de la bioéconomie, tels que le progrès technologique, le financement de R&D, les ressources humaines, la propriété intellectuelle, la réglementation et les modèles économiques. L’ouvrage se penche ensuite sur les choix politiques qui permettraient de tirer parti des avantages sociaux, environnementaux et économiques d’une bioéconomie.

Synthetic biology is a transformative set of technologies which offer great opportunities for the construction of bioengineered parts, devices and microorganisms. However, achieving the rewards offered by synthetic biology will require addressing a range of social, economic, ethical, and legal issues as well as overcoming scientific and technical challenges. Given the enormous promise of synthetic biology, it is critical to develop a framework and to engage the public in an informed dialogue.

Bioeconomy to 2030: Fourth meeting of the Steering Group

The fourth and final meeting of the Steering Group reviewed a draft of the final report which will be released towards the end of the year. It includes overviews of the work undertaken in the earlier stages of the project along with new research on biofuels and cross-sectoral elements on emerging business models. Les maladies infectieuses et négligées font souffrir les familles, la société et l’économie, en particulier dans les pays en voie de développement. Selon l’Organisation mondiale de la santé, un milliard d’êtres humains souffriraient de ces maladies, contre lesquelles il existe peu de nouveaux outils thérapeutiques ou traitements. Le Forum de haut niveau de l’OCDE sur les maladies infectieuses négligées et émergentes examinera les moyens à mettre en œuvre pour améliorer la situation.

The meeting intended to tackle the forward-looking work for the second part of the project focusing on Health, Industry and Agriculture. This was covered in two time-intervals: the first (projections), covering the present up to 2012/15, estimated trends in the use and application of biotechnologies; the second (scenarios) covered the period 2012/15-2030.
