The OECD IFP has released the final report of “The Bioeconomy to 2030” project. The report examines many areas influencing the development of the bioeconomy, including technological advance, R&D funding, human resources, intellectual property, regulation, and business models. The document focuses on efforts in the United States to develop metrics to support sound decision choices by industry and consumers in the selection and use of biobased products. Public policy initiatives have been important in spurring the movement toward increased use of biobased products in the effort to lighten the U.S. environmental footprint and enhance its energy security. This has included developing metrics based on sound science that also provide useful information to inform consumer selections of biobased products.

An OECD workshop hosted by Canada will be held on July 23-24, 2009 in Montréal, Québec immediately after the 6th World Congress on Industrial Biotechnology and Bio-processing to discuss progress over the past 5 years in the methodologies used for sustainability assessment of bio-based products. Participants will be experts from industry, government, academia and international organisations policy makers. The workshop is by invitation only. Synthetic biology is a transformative set of technologies which offer great opportunities for the construction of bioengineered parts, devices and microorganisms. However, achieving the rewards offered by synthetic biology will require addressing a range of social, economic, ethical, and legal issues as well as overcoming scientific and technical challenges. Given the enormous promise of synthetic biology, it is critical to develop a framework and to engage the public in an informed dialogue. Bioeconomy to 2030: Fourth meeting of the Steering Group

The fourth and final meeting of the Steering Group reviewed a draft of the final report which will be released towards the end of the year. It includes overviews of the work undertaken in the earlier stages of the project along with new research on biofuels and cross-sectoral elements on emerging business models. Les maladies infectieuses et négligées font souffrir les familles, la société et l’économie, en particulier dans les pays en voie de développement. Selon l’Organisation mondiale de la santé, un milliard d’êtres humains souffriraient de ces maladies, contre lesquelles il existe peu de nouveaux outils thérapeutiques ou traitements. Le Forum de haut niveau de l’OCDE sur les maladies infectieuses négligées et émergentes examinera les moyens à mettre en œuvre pour améliorer la situation.

The meeting intended to tackle the forward-looking work for the second part of the project focusing on Health, Industry and Agriculture. This was covered in two time-intervals: the first (projections), covering the present up to 2012/15, estimated trends in the use and application of biotechnologies; the second (scenarios) covered the period 2012/15-2030.
